Thankful Thursdays – The Basics

Join with me and others at Grace Alone to be reminded of the many ways that God chooses to bless us with the very basics of our lives.

I live in an area where poverty is close to home, yet hidden from daily view. I don't have to go far to see homelessness, soup kitchens, drugs on the corner, and boarded up homes. The news is riddled with violence and thievery. I choose to live in a comfortable home carefully separated from "that world". Or am I separated from caring?

I am reminded today to thank God for the things I take for granted routinely.

  • A soft bed and warm covers
  • Heat that I can trust to go on and off on schedule
  • A grocery store close to home and finances to get what we need when we need it
  • Gas in a car that runs
  • A husband with a job

The list goes on. I am challenged to keep this list before me today and be reminded of how God chooses to bless me in many ways.

The basics are sometimes easy to over look, but something we shouldn't take for granted. Your list was great and I thank God for my soft bed too. The other night it was so cold...it was snowing and just wicked outside. I was cleaning my car off without gloves on and I began to pray for the homeless people in Detroit. How would they make it on such a cold night. It broke my heart...I get to go home to a warm house and bed...they have the street and some old clothes to try and keep warm with. So the basics really hit home with me on Saturday. Great post. Sorry my comment was so long.

Am I separated from caring...very thought-provoking question. I pray that God would give me His eyes and His heart so that my love never grows cold. I search my heart when I realize how comfortably I live and how others struggle with poverty and drugs and such. It breaks my heart! Great post! Happy Thankful Thursday!

What a great list--things we truly do take for granted. Thank you for reminding me to be thankful for these, too.

Sandy nice to meet you!

I agree we in America take so much granted. When we have traveled to Guatemala and went into villages where people live without everything it was hard to come "home". It is hard to imagine how little our children had before God brought them into our lives forever. We daily as a family thank God for all the basics and we remind ourselves how easily and quickly it can all be taken away!

Blessings and grace,
Jill
